New work @ the Vancouver Art Book Fair

Hi All, if you're in Vancouver this weekend, October 17th and 18th, please drop by the Vancouver Art Gallery and check out the amazing assortment of book works, zines and more, including the latest book by yours truly called Where is Here, from the series - Documents of Psychic Amateurs published by the fabulous Perro Verlag

The series explores psychic phenomena in a variety of intriguing ways and includes works from Bucky Fleur, James MacSwain, Sally Rees, Emily Gooden, Courtney Bourke and James Whitman and Owen Plummer. Here's what the publisher has to say about Where Is Here :

"How is a person a medium, how a conduit, a visionary, a faker? What happens when a ghost enters the room? And who are the ghosts anyway? My Name Is Scot's document, Where is Here, won't provide answers to any of these questions directly but it is, nevertheless, a profoundly focused engagement with, and evocation of the images and voices hovering at the edges of these questions." 

I might add that the book discretely touches on notions of people gone missing and the structures and systems that contrive to disappear them. I might also add that some of the source materials for the book were adapted from the Journals of the Society for Psychical Research, a multi volume anthology which used to reside far back in the stacks @ the VPL but which has since 'vanished' during one of the many recent Library makeovers and which, according to current system records, never existed at all...

Public Address at the Vancouver Art Book Fair

Public Address at the Vancouver Art Book Fair

Vancouver Artists Leannej and My Name Is Scot showcase artists books and zines from Bulgarian artists for the Vancouver Art Book Fair in the Vancouver Art Gallery October 4 and 5th 2014 in an exhibition entitled, Public Address.

Public Address is an ongoing project initiated by Leannej and My Name Is Scot. The project was initiated during their two-month stay at the Sofia Art Residency in Sofia, Bulgaria, which coincided with the first anniversary of the almost year-long public protests against government corruption in Bulgaria.



Public Address explores notions of activism, authority and the ways and means of disseminating public and private messages. As part of the project, Leannej and My Name Is Scot collected zines and artist books by Bulgarian writers and artists, which they will be presenting for the Vancouver Art Book Fair. Featured artists include Sevda Semer, Alla Georgieva, Biliana Velkoa, Steven Guermeur, Kiril Prashkov, Lazar Lyutakov, Voin de Voin, artists from the Bulgarian Queer Forum, and Blood Becomes Water.

During the Vancouver Art Book Fair, Leannej and My Name Is Scot will also be launching their new book, Monument, published by Publication Studios in Vancouver. Monument features images made by My Name Is Scot and texts written by Leannej, chronicling their two months of living and working in Bulgaria.

Hoarding - an installation by Leannej & My Name Is Scot

Hoarding is a vertical midden, an accumulation of ephemera including posters, handbills, tear-away pages, faux signage and plywood mottos that lays bare a visual stratum of textual scheming for forensic investigation. Like the hoardings that surround a boarded up building, or a new construction site, the walls of Project Space Gallery will be covered with a seemingly random aggregation of information signifying both the consequences and implications of remnant efforts and imagined developments.

Representing over 15 years of collaborative and independent, text based works, the installation collages content, chronicles real and imagined moments in time, and documents the ongoing struggle of artist run culture, to (cheaply and meaningfully) insert itself into the public realm.

Individual pieces include selections from Leannej’s acclaimed flowchart narratives which have appeared in a variety of formats and locations, including windows, walls, banners, books and even mugs, while My Name Is Scot provides an assortment of 2-D and 3-D objects which have formed the basis for performance interventions, site specific installations and photo-based texts.

Hoarding reveals both artist's development and commitment to exploring issues of self, place and the constructions of meaning. While many of the pieces have been previously published or displayed, independently of one another, collected together, and presented as part of a larger work, they can be read as a cross section of strategies, a collation of concerns, or an index of intentions.

In Hoarding, objectives overlap and narratives collide, inviting the viewer/reader to decipher the shared storylines and uncover the individual convictions of each artist and perhaps, as a result, consider the infrastructure of their own personal discourse. 

The Installation opened on July 26th, 2013 and will be up for the month of August. Project Space is @ 222 East Georgia Street and will be open from Thursday to Sunday, 1-5 PM. We hope you'll be able to drop by for a look if you are in town and if you have a chance, please let us know what you think!
